Camp Healthy Hope

This is a day camp for children ages 3 to 12 with Type One Diabetes.  Also welcome and encouraged to attend this camp are the siblings of these children.  The foremost goal of this camp is to acquaint children who have diabetes with other children facing the same daily challenges.  It is the hope of the camp to help these children learn about themselves, their diabetes, and make and reach goals that they set both with their diabetes and overall development.  Children with diabetes face the difficult decisions of what to eat, how much to eat, how much insulin to give themselves, and how they feel 24 hours a day 7 days a week.  At camp we work to encourage the children to tune in to their emotions and behaviors to determine whether or not they are the result of a high or low blood sugar.  In addition, we work with age appropriate games to help the children learn how to treat lows and how many carbohydrates are in what types of foods.

We advocate for the siblings to attend this camp in order to develop a higher level of respect and understanding between the child with diabetes and the child without.  At times it can be just as frustrating for the “other” child who may see their sibling with diabetes receiving “extra attention” due to their highs and lows.  We are hopeful that while at camp, these siblings will be able to make a connection with each other which will help them along the way to be more understanding and not alone.

While at this camp, your child will be able to partake in activities that all children engage in without the concern of their diabetes.  Our staff is made up of members with and with out diabetes; however all have some connection to it whether it is through a family member or a best friend.  Prior to camp, staff is acquainted with diabetes through training sessions.  At these sessions, warning signs of hyperglycemia and hypoglycemia are covered in depth along with the appropriate treatments for them.  In addition to our counselors, we have a camp nurse along with a Certified Diabetes Educator.
